Shameless Money The Unbudget
How the system actually works

Meet the Unbudget. One system, one number to watch.

The standard budget asks you to predict, categorize, and resist. The Unbudget asks none of that. It runs in the background, pays the future first, and leaves one number for you to watch day to day. Decisions get made by the system, not by willpower.

4 buckets · automated end-to-end Field Guide for what your brain can't hold
What it is

Four buckets, automated end to end.

Every dollar you bring in goes into one of these four. You can add smaller sub-buckets underneath for precision, but everything still rolls up to four.

01

Goals

What you're saving toward. Next vacation, Life Happens fund, the bigger thing. Funded first, automatically.

Funding order
First · auto-sweep
02

Monthly Commitments

Recurring obligations. Rent, utilities, subscriptions, debt minimums. Paid automatically from a dedicated account.

Cadence
Monthly · auto-debit
03

Irregular Expenses

Predictable, but not monthly. Insurance premiums, gifts, car repairs, annual renewals. Funded a little each month so they're ready when they hit.

Strategy
Sinking fund
04

Flexible Spending

The one number you watch day to day. Everything that isn't accounted for above lives here. If Flex has money, you have permission.

Sub-buckets · precision

Four buckets, with room underneath.

A sinking fund for big yearly bills. A fun-money stash. An "oops" cushion. Whatever you need. Sub-buckets add precision. Everything still rolls up to the four. You never watch more than one number.

The Field Guide · external memory

What your brain can't reliably hold.

Rules. Decisions made. What's owed where. How you've adjusted. The Field Guide is the handbook the system runs out of. When things wobble, you open page 6, not your bank app.

What it looks like for you

Your Money Map is your Unbudget.

Accounts, numbers, goals, rendered as a visual diagram of how money moves through your real life. Four buckets, your sub-buckets, flow visible at a glance.

See where money actually goes. Not where you think it goes. Most people are surprised by at least one bucket.
Name goals in dollars and dates. "$300/mo toward Hawaii by Dec 2026," not "save more someday."
Find the real leak. Sometimes income isn't the problem. Sometimes Flex is leaking. The Map tells you which.
For business owners

Personal and business, mapped together.

If you run a business, the Unbudget covers both sides without making you do mental gymnastics. One system. One mental model. No flipping between two systems in your head.

Four buckets, business-flavored. Goals, Commitments, Irregular Expenses, and Owner's Draw + Flex.
Owner's Draw as the clean bridge. Money moves predictably, on schedule. No year-end tax nightmare.
One mental model for both sides. No flipping between two systems, no "I'll figure it out at year-end."
Why it works for ADHD brains

Built for the brain you actually have.

Automation does the work your brain can't hold in its head.

The system runs while your attention is elsewhere. Past-you decided once. Present-you doesn't think about it.

One number replaces 47 categories.

Flex is the only number you have to watch. Everything else is handled.

The Field Guide is the external memory.

Rules and decisions live somewhere reliable. Your brain doesn't have to be the database.

Permission replaces willpower.

Spending the Flex bucket isn't failing. It's the system working.

The research

Built on what works for ADHD brains.

Every design choice in the Unbudget lines up with what research keeps showing about ADHD brains and money.

debt default risk by age 40.
Without a system in place, the money damage builds year after year.

The future feels far away. That's a hallmark of ADHD.
So the system pays the future first, before willpower ever has to weigh in.

When the saving is locked in ahead of time, it sticks, and it works even better for ADHD brains.

Knowing the right answer and trusting it are two different operations. The Unbudget is built on what the research says works for brains that already know the right answer.

How it shows up

The Unbudget in every offer.

From someone who's been there

I'm a CFP® who, for a long time, couldn't keep my own money straight.

Quietly carrying credit card debt I hid from myself. Avoiding the bank app for days at a time, then opening it braced for bad news. Pretending it was fine when it wasn't.

I was diagnosed with ADHD at 16 and spent a long time trying to outrun it. Reconnecting with it as an adult finally cracked it open. The systems I'd been trained to teach were built for a different kind of brain. Mine needed something else. So did most of my clients'.

I built the Unbudget because every budget I'd been trained to teach asked an ADHD brain to do the thing it can't reliably do: plan ahead, sort every dollar, and white-knuckle it, day after day. The Unbudget puts the heavy lifting in the system, so your brain doesn't have to.

I get it because I lived it. Then I built a way out, refined across hundreds of ADHD clients.
